Athil Artham Ullathu................

If in the 1990s you were walking from Ranganathan street down on Rameswaram Road and heard this song from an apartment sung in a male voice , then you can safely assume that my parents had just left after visiting me.😁

My mother was that typical Mel thattu mamiyar usually caricatured in Tamil movies.

All her conversations would go like this...

Why have you not bought a car yet, look at your brothers they have already gone through 3 cars.

When are you going to become an officer, look at your sister-in-laws . See how  your manni travels by train in her private cabin .

Not yet bought a microwave, computer you name it.

My pacifying answer that I would definitely buy what ever was necessary when the need arises fell on deaf ears.

Whereas my  husband had been brought up by his grandmother and  had never left that Rameswaram Road   , my parents as a family had lived all over India .

The languages spoken by my brothers and sis in laws was English, Hindi and Tamil in that order.

Most times my mother would still think of  herself as the commanding officer’s memsahib.

She would never realise the chaos she left behind after her visits.

My husband chose this song to give vent to his feelings. He would make the children sing along with him.

Since I was not blind to my mother’s faults I would at times join in the chorus .

Only sometimes ......after all she was my mother .

Now whenever  we hear this song my son and I cannot help smiling and remembering those days.
